Ceramics, known as the greatest invention of ancient China, is a significant contribution to the human civilization. Throughout the history of ceramic production, those crafted in the Song Dynasty (960-1278), in particular, has been acclaimed as the absolute pinnacle of all time, which are held in high esteem for its embodiment of aesthetic ideology and humanistic spirit. The Song Dynasty witnessed the development of the “Five Great Kilns” (RU, GUAN, GE, DING, and JUN), and initiated the philosophy of “applying the artwork as the vehicle of Dao” which epitomizes a superior aesthetics of “revealing the truth of nature in the simplest form” and perfectly interprets a unique artistic approach and spiritual pursuit of Chinese people as well as the essence of Chinese culture, creating a lasting legacy that transcends time, space and nationalities.
Due to the extreme rarity and religious sublimity, ceramics from the “Five Great Kilns” have attracted generations of connoisseurs from royalties, aristocrats, and literati. “Exquisite 50 – Song Imperial Porcelain” presents 50 invaluable antiques crafted in the “Five Great Kilns” as well as the Zhanggongxiang kiln, exploring their traditional values in the context of contemporary art studies, providing a multi-perspective observation to the audience.
