Introduction
Yang Fa’s calligraphy is more renowned than his painting, with his seal script (zhuanshu) works considered the most accomplished, rich, varied, and highly individualistic.
This piece features seal script characterized by frequent use of curved and trembling strokes, with highly variable and unconventional character forms, creating a style that is both expansive and exaggerated. Horizontal and vertical strokes are treated freely, bending and deforming to produce a sense of fluttering movement. Some strokes, due to intense trembling brushwork, resemble “earthworms.” The transitions blend angular and rounded forms; strokes start with varying momentum, sometimes forward, sometimes backward. Curved and straight strokes support each other, integrating different seal script styles like zhou and miu. The rhythm of varying pressure and speed adds a dynamic flow. The overall layout balances dense and sparse areas. The cursive-script signature contrasts sharply with the seal script—free, flowing, and unrestrained—reflecting Yang Fa’s wild and uninhibited personality throughout his life.
