Introduction
Wang Jiyuan was a core member of the “Jue Lan Society” and the “Tian Ma Society” as well as the founder of the “Yi Yuan Painting Research Institute”. He pioneered new paths for modern Chinese art in his early years through Western painting techniques. In his later years, he returned to the realm of ink and wash painting, integrating the expressive spirit of traditional Chinese literati painting into oil and watercolor paintings, creating a unique intercultural expression. Tulips outlined the shapes of flowers and leaves with Chinese freehand ink lines, then he applied oil paint to create the texture and form. His brushstrokes were bold and layered, and the colors were rich yet exuding an elegant freshness. The tulip, as a cultural symbol originating from Central Asia and flourishing in Europe, was transformed here into a visual medium for intercultural dialogue and integration.
