Introduction
Being the founder of China’s first modern art group, the “Storm & Stress Society” (Juelan Society), Pang Xunqin was known for his pioneering explorations in painting and craft art, as well as his research on the art of China’s ethnic minorities and traditional art. He once proposed that the creative logic of Chinese art is “heart–eye–heart”, emphasizing its focus on the inner world and spirit. Jade Belt and Red Velvet was created in the late period of his artistic career, during which the artist often used flowers to express emotions and aspirations, demonstrating strong experimentation in composition and technique. In the upper part of the painting, clusters of golden yellow, ivory white, and rose red chrysanthemums are surrounded by lush green leaves, creating a rich visual tension; below, a glass vase and its reflection construct a space where reality and illusion intertwine, while the yellow-green dotted background imparts a sense of flowing vitality. The artist delicately outlines various types of chrysanthemums, such as pompon mums and pine-needle varieties, conveying to the viewer a serene yet vigorous life energy.
