Introduction
Piet Mondrian was a pioneer of the 20th-century abstract art and a leader of Dutch De Stijl movement. Early in his career, he was deeply nurtured by the artistic traditions of the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. In the painting, the contrast between the highlights on the vessels and their mirrored reflections demonstrates the artist’s command of realistic technique and meticulous observation. A bunch of honesty, long associated in Europe with prosperity and wealth, glistens in the vase like silver coins, echoing the cultural legacy of the Dutch Golden Age in Mondrian’s work, while his exploration of brushwork and light subtly reveals traces of Impressionist influence.
