Introduction
Yee Bon, a representative of the first generation of Chinese artists to study abroad from the Lingnan region and a pioneer of Western painting in Hong Kong, was known for works rich in the atmosphere of everyday life. In the 1950s, Yee returned to mainland China to settle, entering a new stage of artistic practice. By experimenting with ink painting, he deepened his understanding of traditional national art, making outstanding contributions to the nationalization of oil painting. Sunflowers, created during this period, depict a vase brimming with sunflowers in bold, passionate colours and vigorous brushstrokes. The work combines elements of classical Western oil painting with modern art. At the same time, the broad red–green contrast of the background blurs the flowers’ real setting, lending the piece a powerful visual impact and allowing intense emotion to surge from the canvas.
