Introduction
Contemporary American artist Christopher Wool is renowned for his large, post-conceptual paintings that incorporate text. Untitled (P16) is Wool’s first series of iconic works. Rather than focusing on the content, he was more interested in the process of creation. Using a hand-painted method with cheap wallpaper, he mechanically reproduced floral patterns with a roller, transforming traditional decorative floral motifs through non-traditional techniques. This approach resulted in works that blend figurative characteristics with elements of abstract expressionism. Through this process, Wool began to pave a new path in exploring “what painting can do” and “what painting is,” enormously challenging the function and definition of contemporary painting.
