Introduction
James Rosenquist was a pioneering figure in the Pop Art movement, renowned for his collages that fragmented and reassembled advertising and the media. Untitled is one of Rosenquist’s representative works created in his Florida studio starting in the 1980s. The plants in the painting are depicted with fine detail and intense colours, while the interspersed, varying lines and images represent fragments of female facial features. The composition not only closely links the two elements but also creates a striking contrast between the female images in commercial advertisements and the lush plants and flowers, making them interfere with each other. Rosenquist described this series of floral works as “ecological and political paintings,” suggesting the fragility of life on Earth amidst commercial and technological progress.
