Introduction
Huang Xianzhi, a first generation of Chinese artist to study in France, was renowned for his exceptional realism and notable artistic achievements. Specializing in still-life painting, he began to depict the flowers and trees grown in his garden in the 1960s, seeking a balance and harmony between form and expressiveness. When creating A Thousand Violets Are Always Better than Spring, Huang was already suffering from an eye disease, yet he remained full of hope for his future artistic path. Using lively, rich colours, he portrayed a flourishing bouquet, conveying the joy of seeing a bright horizon in his creative journey and embodying his artistic belief that “one must view the subject through the eyes of colour.” His brushwork is swift and decisive, the vase rendered with solid precision, and the overall tension of the composition reveals the profound realism at the core of his craft.
