Introduction
Deeply inspired by plein air techniques, Claude Monet moved to the small village of Vétheuil in 1878, where he experienced a decisive moment of reassessing his personal and professional life, and it was in this year that he painted L’Escalier. Instead of depicting scenes of Parisian urban life, Monet shifted his focus to capturing the transience of nature, as he did in L’Escalier. In this painting, Monet uses rich, luminous colours to capture a quiet, peaceful autumn moment in the courtyard of an old Vétheuil farmhouse, rendering with delicate precision the dappled play of light across its walls and foliage.
