Introduction
In his later years, Su Tianci resided in Tangshan in Nanjing, where he was deeply devoted to the natural scenery of Jiangnan, often tending to the flowers and plants in his garden. Throughout his life, Su painted the subject of Narcissus on more than one occasion. This work, Narcissus, was created in the final stage of his artistic career. With light, deft brushstrokes and a rich jade-green palette, he captures the supple texture of the plant’s leaves and the delicate softness of its white petals. At the same time, the hazy, ethereal background—reminiscent of misty Jiangnan rain—makes the pot of Narcissus appear to float in the air, infusing the painting with the refined sentiment and poetic spirit of traditional literati art.
