Introduction
As a leading figure of the Young British Artists (YBA), Damien Hirst has repeatedly explored themes of flowers, animals, life, and death throughout his controversial career, examining the definitions of “truth” and the systems of trust in humanity. From 1993 to 2021, Hirst developed his Fact Paintings series, exploring the complex relationship between painting and photography since the invention of photographic technology in the 19th century. Among this series, Dark Pink Rose employs a hyperrealist approach and a vivid magenta palette to render an exacting close-up of a rose. It creates a striking visual effect by using lifelike immediacy, which compels viewers to consider how, in the age of modern technology, painting—as a medium for representing the world around us—might alter its relationship to reality.
