Introduction
Kees van Dongen was one of the leading figures of the Fauvism movement in early 20th-century Paris, known for his dynamic, long lines, bold and direct colours, and rich brushwork. His most distinctive works depict the luxurious images of upper-class women, but he also created many still lifes, including Camélias. The painting employs the same techniques he used to portray female figures, with his typical intense colours and heavy brushstrokes outlining the lush, full camellias, reflecting van Dongen’s aesthetic sensibility and capturing the social mood and aesthetic preferences of Paris during a special historical period.
