Introduction
Hu Shanyu, one of China’s first generation of artists to study abroad, was celebrated for his distinctive style that fused the aesthetics of Impressionism with those of Chinese folk art. From the 1920s onward, Hu developed a deep bond with Hangzhou through his studies and work. Since the beginning of the 1970s, he has painted a series of West Lake landscapes, among which Water Lilies at San Tan Yin Yue is a symbolic piece. Centred on water lilies, the painting captures the bright, radiant light characteristic of Impressionism while also embracing the freehand spirit of traditional Chinese painting. His precise control over detail and colour infuses the scene with vibrant vitality.
