Introduction
Pang Xunqin was the founder of China’s first modern art group, the “Storm & Stress Society” (Juelan Society) and he was also the founding president of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, the first higher education institution for arts and crafts in the People’s Republic of China. In 1972, he retired from the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, and a shift in his personal trajectory led him to return to floral subjects, which became an important medium for his emotional expression and artistic exploration. Autumn Fragrance was imbued with the evocative luminosity of Impressionism, with loose brushstrokes and restrained charm, presenting both the formal aesthetic of decorative art and the fresh rhythm and lyrical quality akin to music. During a special period, Pang Xunqin expressed his literary sentiments and aspirations through chrysanthemums—despite being in adversity, he preserved beauty and art spirit in the world with gentle yet resilient brushstrokes.
