Introduction
Zenzaburo Kojima was a renowned modern Japanese Western-style painter. In 1925, he studied art in France and made significant contributions to the path of “Japanese oil painting.” In the 1950s and 1960s, Kojima devoted much of his energy to creating floral still lifes, and it was during this period that Roses emerged. The vivid, lively colours reflect his absorption of Fauvist influences, while the flattened forms of the vase and flowers, outlined in black, draw on the decorative traditions of Japanese art—including Nanga, Rinpa, and Ukiyo-e. It created a subtle balance between expressive colour and ornamental elegance.
