Introduction
As one of the Triumvirate of Post-Impressionism, Paul Cézanne is recognized as the father of modern art, having introduced subversive changes to the form of painting and the use of colour, laying the foundations for modern and avant-garde art. Fleurs dans un Vase is an early work from Cézanne’s fervent and exploratory experimental period. At this stage, he often employed dark, highly saturated tones and used a palette knife to achieve vivid, striking effects. In this painting, he boldly enlarged a glass vase to explore the effects of reflected and distorted light and shadow. This groundbreaking work also foreshadowed his exploration of techniques to express the three-dimensionality of objects through colour contrasts and to construct form with geometric elements.
