Introduction
Known as a master of modern Chinese painting, Wu Guanzhong had a deep affection for the resilient vitality of wildflowers. As early as the 1970s, during his period of rural realism, he began creating works under the theme of “wild chrysanthemums.” In 1992, at the height of his career and amid a deepening exploration of abstraction, Wu returned to this subject. Using rich, vibrant oil colours, he interpreted the ideal of “likeness in unlikeness” in ink paintings, rendering the flowers through pure blocks of colour. The luxuriant branches stretch and relax in a measured rhythm. At the same time, both the background and the flowerpot are omitted, allowing the composition to transcend the physical world and release a vigorous life force from within the realm of abstraction.
