Introduction
Vase de Fleurs was created in the spring of 1901, during the early formation of Pablo Picasso’s individualistic style and it initiated his “Blue Period.” In the same year, his close friend Carles Casagemas committed suicide due to emotional frustrations. The pain of losing the best friend profoundly affected Picasso, prompting him to explore themes such as the essence of life, love, and death. The blue-gray tone pervading the painting sets the emotional tone for this period and it also marks the establishment of his first mature style. In an important retrospective organized by Picasso himself in 1932, this work was exhibited alongside other iconic pieces from the “Blue Period,” reflecting the artist’s appreciation for his early explorations and also confirming its crucial role in his creative trajectory.
