Introduction
French Expressionist painter Bernard Buffet was known for his gaunt, angular figures, sombre and shadowed atmosphere, and stark intersecting black lines. From the 1950s onward, Western art circles were abuzz with debates over realism, figuration, and abstraction, and it was in this climate that Buffet created a distinctive body of work, including the still-life floral paintings that he frequently revisited. Bouquet de Roses is one such work: using bold, print-like colours outlined in black, Buffet depicts seven roses in a vase. The flatly painted background and skewed perspective dissolve any sense of depth, making the vivid red blooms appear as though they stand suspended in a frozen space.
