Introduction
Widely acclaimed as a leading female painter, Marie Françoise Gilot made her mark on the French art scene as early as the age of 21. Her style hovers between abstraction and figuration, bearing traits of Cubism yet marked by rich colour, softened angles, and vibrant energy, defying simple classification. She once said, “One cannot define a style precisely, just as one cannot define the scent of a flower; it is an indefinable quality.” Gilot had a lengthy career, and Rose Bush, a significant work created at the age of 92, is an excellent example of Gilot’s use of bold, saturated colours to dissect and represent nature – the rose petals are broken down into abstract geometric shapes and painted in her favourite colour, red.
