Introduction
Ryuzaburo Umebara, who studied in Europe in his early years under Pierre-Auguste Renoir, developed a unique synthesis of Western Impressionist and Fauvist color with the spirit of Japanese aesthetics. He pioneered a style of “Japanese-style oil painting” known for its vivid palette and decorative sensibility. Roses painted at the age of eighty when his art had reached its zenith, is dominated by a fiery red. The petals and leaves are defined by swift, rhythmic lines and unbridled brushwork. The rose’s form is distilled to its essence, bursting with vitality through the artist’s unrestrained execution.
