Introduction
As one of the most important Pop artists, Tom Wesselmann often juxtaposed elements of everyday life with high art; bold, bright colours and flattened forms characterized his work. Beginning in the 1980s, Wesselmann started to create works on cut-steel panels, and by the 1990s, he was incorporating tributes to works by his contemporaries. Still Life with Liz embodies both periods: set against the backdrop of Pop pioneer Andy Warhol’s iconic Liz, the composition features a vase of red roses, a blue bouquet, and two oranges, rendered in vibrant, pulsating brushstrokes. By retaining visible strokes and lines, he softened the metallic, industrial nature of the cut steel, bringing the work’s painterly quality to the forefront.
