Introduction
As a pioneer of modern Vietnamese art, Lê Phổ excels in paintings of flowers and women, blending Chinese and Vietnamese traditional aesthetics with Western painting techniques to create a unique visual expression rich in poetry and romance. This work belongs to his “Romanet period” characterized by more vivid colors, enhanced narrative and emotional depth, reflecting the turbulent social realities following World War II and his complex state of mind after relocating to France. In the painting, the dark firelight outside the window contrasts sharply with the quietly blooming potted plants indoors; the use of scattered perspective creates a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere, also reflecting the dual fractures of the era and the individual psyche.
