Introduction
French Post-Impressionist artist Émile Bernard is regarded as one of the founders of the late 19th-century movements Cloisonnism and Synthetism. He achieved a decisive shift from the broken brushstrokes of Impressionism to a flattened style defined by dark contours, leaving a profound impact on the development of modern art. Nature Morte was created at the height of Bernard’s career, using the quintessential techniques of Cloisonnism to depict a vase of blooming flowers set against a backdrop of green vines. The tilted perspective and thick application of paint reveal the influence of his friend Cézanne, while his signature dark outlines are especially prominent in the meticulous rendering of the fabrics.
