Introduction
Luo Erchun, a disciple of Yan Wenliang, is an outstanding representative of China’s third generation of oil painters. He is known for expressing intense emotional appeals through the use of colour, and his oil paintings exhibit a strong expressionist style. Throughout his life, Luo Erchun created numerous floral works, often depicting cockscomb flowers due to their deep, dignified red colour and resilient nature, which reflected his own humble and grounded character. Cockscomb King is one of his representative pieces. Wild brushstrokes create a swirling, ocean-like background, while calm blues set off the rich reds. The cockscomb flowers, with their flame-like, rhythmic lines, convey a sense of joyous life unfolding, much like his passionate, free-spirited works and his serene, modest personality.
