Introduction
Raoul Dufy, as a representative artist of Fauvism, was inspired by Henri Matisse’s Luxury, Calm and Pleasure in 1905 and established a Fauvist style centered on vivid colors and simplified outlines. Fleurs was created in 1908, when Dufy had been influenced by the geometric structures and contrasting colors in Paul Cézanne’s works. The artist depicts dark red petals with thick, flat brushstrokes, creating rich layers that strongly contrast with the large areas of cobalt blue in the background. The abstract rhythm extending outward between the flowers and the background presents a decorative tone. Dufy, unbound by established painting forms and theories, developed his own distinctive “stenographic” style.
