Introduction
Raoul Dufy, a key figure of Fauvism, developed a uniquely colourful and decorative style. Fleurs was created during a pivotal moment in his career, marking an experimental phase in which he transitioned from his early Impressionist approach to Fauvism, while also developing an interest in Cubism. The blossoms are rendered with thick, flat brushstrokes in a rich range of dark red tones, while the broad cobalt-blue background reveals both Dufy’s personal colour preferences and his distinctive use of non-naturalistic hues. Between the flowers and the background, he creates a hazy, abstract rhythm that seems to extend beyond the frame, giving the work a decorative undertone that heightens the viewer’s visual delight.
