Introduction
Painted by Hua Qian at age 71, this work captures the vibrant scene of early February, when nature awakens and begonias bloom. At the top, a graceful begonia branch stretches across the painting, with a long-tailed ribbon bird perched, turning to observe a pair of sparrows flying closely below—together creating a harmonious moment of spring life.
In ancient China, the begonia (haitang) often symbolized talented scholars and beautiful ladies, while the long-tailed ribbon bird represented longevity. Together, they convey a wish for a long and harmonious life. Hua Qian’s meticulous brushwork brings the bird’s feathers and begonia branches to vivid life. Below, lively sparrows add further charm to the scene. The painting’s delicate colors and vibrant composition embody the vitality of early spring.
This artwork was once in the collection of renowned modern calligrapher, painter, and collector Tang Yun.
