Introduction
Among the pioneers of Chinese artists to study in France, Zhou Bichu was renowned for his acute sensitivity to light and colour, as well as his profound exploration of Pointillism, consistently integrating the charm of Chinese traditional and folk art with the principles of Western optical theory. Still life was his favourite subject. Chrysanthemum centers on ten chrysanthemums arranged in a blue-and-white porcelain vase — symbolizing “perfection in all things.” The background is built up with indigo pointillist dots, setting off the colourful, gracefully swaying blossoms and the lush green leaves full of vitality. The precise layering and structure of colours convey the texture and solidity of the subject, while evoking a distant, nostalgic atmosphere.
