Introduction
Henri Fantin-Latour was a 19th-century master of floral still lifes and portraiture. Although closely associated with Impressionist painters, he remains independent of any artistic movement or school throughout his life, and he is renowned for his mastery of techniques inherited from the old masters. In this work, the natural beauty of the flowers is set against a dark grey background, subtly reflecting the poetic sensibility of Romanticism and the influence of Impressionist use of light and color. The transparent glass vase demonstrates his exceptional skill in realism. The white narcissus, hyacinth, and tulip in the vase respectively echo motifs of self-reflection, the sorrow of immortality, and purity from Greek and Roman myths. Fantin-Latour is introspective and melancholic by nature, often navigating the tension between market demand and personal expression in his work. These flowers, rich in mythological symbolism, seem to metaphorically reflect his inner world, implying his profound contemplation of life and art.
