Fleurs dans un Vase

Paul Cézanne
1872-1873

Description

As one of the Triumvirate of Post-Impressionism, Paul Cézanne is known as the father of modern art because he brought about subversive changes to the form of painting and the use of color, laying the foundations of modern and avant-garde art. Fleurs dans un Vase is one of Cézanne’s fervent and exploratory early experiments in painting, in which he boldly enlarged a glass vase to explore the effects of reflected and distorted light and shadow. This groundbreaking work also foreshadowed his exploration of techniques, to express the three-dimensionality of objects through color contrasts and to construct form with geometric elements.
