Rose Bush

Marie Françoise Gilot
2013

Description

Widely acclaimed as a leading female French painter, Marie Françoise Gilot made her mark on the French art scene as early as the age of 21. Her style vacillated between abstraction and figuration, defying easy categorization. Gilot had a lengthy career, and Rose Bush, a major work created at the age of 92, is an excellent example of Gilot’s use of bold, saturated colors to dissect and represent nature – the rose petals are broken down into abstract geometric shapes and painted in her favorite color, red.
