Introduction
Gao Xiang was the only member of the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou” whose main focus was landscape painting. This late work depicts a scholar reading at his desk in a small woodland cottage, nestled among flowing streams and towering peaks. Dense trees veil the dwelling, with bamboo and plantain flanking the courtyard. Executed with bold, economical brushwork, hemp-fibre strokes are used for the rocks, and touches of moss dots add to the composition, conveying a secluded, meditative atmosphere—an image of the artist’s ideal retreat. A self-inscribed poem in the upper left corner reflects Gao’s modest life and yearning for seclusion.
Formerly in the collection of the Qing official and poet Li Peijing.
