Introduction
Subodh Gupta is one of India’s most internationally recognized contemporary artists, known for creating large-scale sculptures and installations using mass-produced, everyday objects that comment on the changing social and cultural landscape. Since 2019, Gupta has embarked on the What’s in a Name? series. In this piece, he depicts two withered flowers, with petals hanging by a thread and the stamens withered and curled. The simple composition and delicate brushstrokes imbue the dried petals with a unique texture and form, reflecting the artist’s unique vision of life, death, and the eternal cycles of nature.
