Introduction
Jeff Koons is one of the most influential artists in the contemporary art world. Wall Relief with Bird is part of his “Made in Heaven” series and is influenced by the rich artistic traditions rooted in the Baroque, Rococo, and Romantic periods. It was created by German and Italian artisans using the traditional polychromed carving technique. Vibrantly colored flowers burst forth from lush green leaves, with a hummingbird fluttering between them, feeding on nectar while also aiding in pollination. With this brightly coloured and captivating flower sculpture, Koons depicts the natural world as an idealized paradise, celebrating the abundance of love, life, and eternity. Flowers, as an image and a medium, constitute a significant motif in Jeff Koons’ work. The work foreshadows the artist’s subsequent classic works, which use real flowers as a medium, including Puppy (1992).
