Introduction
Sa Dji (Sha Qi) studied in Belgium in the 1930s and later returned to China due to mental illness. He maintained an independent and free artistic stance throughout his life, and is often celebrated as the “Van Gogh of China”. As Sa Dji approached old age, he continued working despite facing frustrations and illnesses. Through a certain “poetic intuition,” he produced works with strong resonance. Luxury in Life is a mature masterpiece that combines expressive and realist styles. Solid, forceful brushstrokes transform concrete forms into mottled blocks of colour, carrying the surging emotions of the artist’s inner world onto the canvas. The work demonstrates strong tensions in the composition while celebrating the simple beauty of nature and the magnificence of life.
