Introduction
Known as the “Mother of American Modern Art,” Georgia O’ Keeffe gained fame in the 1920s for her renowned depictions of New York City skyscrapers and distinctive floral works. Anthurium was created during this period. She dedicated her life to studying and creating modernist floral still lifes, using detailed close-ups and bold abstraction to unfold the natural beauty of flowers. In this piece, she delicately and accurately rendered the waxy texture of the anthurium with bright greens and pinks. The magnified bracts of the flower surround the bloom, guiding the viewer to observe and reflect on the universal meaning contained in the flower’s overlooked formal qualities, such as its unique colours, lines, and shapes.
