Introduction
François-Xavier Lalanne is known for his subversion of traditional animal motifs and for his advocacy of “functional” sculptures, which blurs the boundaries between art and design by adding functionality to decorative sculptures. Hérisson Topiare is a flowerpot sculpture made of green patinated bronze in the shape of a naive hedgehog. Soft and vibrant succulents form the spikes on the creature’s back, symbolizing alertness, perseverance, wealth, and luck, and perhaps echoing the role of plants as protectors of nature. Rooted in the deep reverberations between art history and nature, this work created by Lalanne and his wife advanced the limits of Surrealist sculpture.
