Introduction
Hoo Mojong belonged to the second generation of Chinese artists who studied in France. Her creative style is deeply inspired by Post-Impressionism, characterized by rich colours, bold outlines, and decorative aesthetics. Hoo Mojong’s floral still lifes began in the 1970s, and intense colours and simple objects characterize them. In Flowers, the upright green stems and leaves contrast sharply with the round, orange-red petals. The flat, monochromatic background eliminates any sense of depth, reinforcing the two-dimensional effect. The extraordinary size of the plants gives the flowers and leaves a primeval, divine character. The artist’s childlike and simple approach reveals the original beauty of life, evoking a timeless and charming quality.
