Introduction
Georges Braque pioneered Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso. The term “Cubism” was itself coined by critics in response to Braque’s work. Still life occupied a central position in his creations, serving as a direct medium for him to explore the expression of Cubism. In the 1920s, Braque gradually moved away from the strict structures of early Cubism, shifting towards a more personal style with brighter colors and richer surface textures. Corbeille de Fleurs was created during this period and the artist employed a unique technique of mixing pigments with sand, highlighting the granularity and thickness of the painting, perfectly aligning with Braque’s artistic concept that “Tactile space separates us from objects, as opposed to visual space, which separates objects from one another.” The simple yet lush marigolds on the table, accompanied by an open sheet of music scores nearby, reflecting Braque’s deep fascination with music at that time.
