Introduction
As a leading figure in contemporary Neo-Expressionism and an acclaimed film director, Julian Schnabel is renowned for utilizing unconventional materials to create works that are rich in emotion and expressive power. Inspired by the rose bushes lining the driveway of his New York residence and recalling the roses he once saw at Van Gogh’s grave, Schnabel returned to his signature plate-painting format in 2020. Using plates and ceramic fragments to build texture, he created a series of floral works. In Victory in S-Chanf III, the vibrant sky blues, lush greens, and blooming rose pinks convey the artist’s optimism for the nation’s future. The roses—symbols of rebirth in Van Gogh’s work—also carry Schnabel’s fervent hope that difficult times will soon pass.
