Introduction
In 1901, Pablo Picasso held his first solo exhibition in Paris, emerging under the title of genius in the art world. Vase de Fleurs was painted in the same year, a rare still life from a pivotal moment in his artistic development. Its soft, blue-grey tones foreshadow his imminent “Blue Period,” reflecting the personal, creative approach and the new artistic experiments he was beginning to forge amid the vibrant clash of ideas in Paris, teeming with Impressionist masters. In 1932, during a landmark retrospective exhibition of his work, Picasso selected this painting alongside other signature pieces from the Blue Period. From this earliest phase through every subsequent transformation, flowers remained a recurring presence throughout Picasso’s artistic life.
