Introduction
Suzanne Valadon, a distinguished Post-Impressionist painter of the 20th century, nurtured by the vibrant modern art scene of Paris, was largely self-taught. Her works embody subdued colour palettes, fluid forms, and distinctive style. In 1930, during her later years, Valadon painted Bouquet de Roses, Bleuets et Fougères in the symbolic style of her mature period. The floral motif—frequently seen in her oeuvre—here fully displays the Post-Impressionist qualities of her work, from the use of defining contour lines and layered colour application to her handling of space. Much like the bouquet in the painting, Valadon herself was cultivated in the fertile artistic soil of Paris, ultimately blossoming on the stage of the art world.
