Introduction
Pierre Bonnard, a founding figure of the Symbolist group Les Nabis, was known for his highly decorative use of colour, breaking away from dependence on naturalistic accuracy and conventional rules of perspective. He is regarded as one of the greatest colorists of the 20th century. Often called an “intimist” for his fondness for depicting intimate scenes of everyday life, Bonnard captures a moment in Vase de Fleurs, portraying a quiet corner of his home. The lush, vivid magenta blooms contrast sharply with the soft, fresh white flowers, creating a striking interplay of warm and cool, bright and muted tones. This natural division of colour is further enhanced by a top-down light source, making the vase of flowers stand out vividly against the patterned geometric tablecloth and the dark-toned wall.
