Introduction
Aristide Maillol was a renowned French sculptor and painter of the 19th century, celebrated for his distinctive visual language in depicting the female form. He imbued the female body with the grandeur and vitality of naturalism, while combining the academic traditions of classicism with a bold, selective approach to rendering form. As a painting from Maillol’s later years, Vase de Roses represents his mature artistic style. Broad, vibrant colour blocks define the roses, while thick outlines illuminate the edges of the petals, revealing the influence of his contemporary, Paul Gauguin. In this work, the solidity of form coexists with expressive pictorial power, embodying Maillol’s role as a bridge between classical and modern art.
