Sunflowers (Girasoles)

Fernando Botero
1976

Description

Since the 1970s, Botero had been known throughout the world for the exaggerated and bulbous forms in his thematic paintings and sculptures, cultivating a unique Botero style — Boterismo. His still lifes are scarce and attractive. Sunflowers (Girasoles) is a visual representation of Botero’s iconic style, a tribute to Van Gogh. By altering the compositional proportions of seemingly simple objects, Botero reinforced the sensuality and absurdity of ordinary objects in life, opening up new and unique perspectives on the millennial tradition of still-life painting.
