Bouquet de Lilas

Camille Pissarro
1876

Description

The only artist to have participated in all eight Impressionist exhibitions, Camille Pissarro is often referred to as the mainstay of the Impressionist group. He was also a source of inspiration to his younger peers and subsequently revered as the Leader of Impressionism. As he reached the height of his career in the 1870s, his frequent collaborations with Paul Cézanne led him to pay close attention to the use of geometric shapes and naturalistic details, laying groundwork for later explorations of abstract painting. It was during this period that Pissarro created a rather rare floral themed painting, Bouquet de Lilas. With his signature style of overlapping colors and masterful brushwork, Pissarro had rendered a thick and dense texture to depict an exuberant bouquet arranged in a vase placed in the middle of his garden, revealing the rustic beauty of everyday life.
