Introduction
Regarded as the greatest Italian painter of the 20th century, Giorgio Morandi is known for his quiet and elegant still lifes. Fiori is an exceptional work from the late stage of Morandi’s career, continued his approach to painting still lifes with vase-like objects. Morandi used the same gray tones from the vessel to depict the flowers in the painting, giving them the textures of a still life. He also used active brushstrokes rarely seen in his works to depict the vase and echo the complexity of the flower forms. Beginning in the 1950s, it was precisely through repeated experiments in the creation of floral still lifes that allowed Morandi to explore unusual ways of painting still lifes.
