Introduction
Created in Li Shan’s later years at age 69, this masterpiece depicts twisted ancient cypresses flanking rocky outcrops, a clear stream flowing between them, and clusters of orchids along the banks. At the center, a celestial deer stands, glancing backward. The deer is rendered with dry brush strokes, while the overall composition avoids overworking the ink, resulting in a bold and vigorous scene, reflecting Li Shan’s mature artistic skill.
The inscription reads: “Ancient cypresses dense, deer calling aloud. All is harmonious, receiving heaven’s blessings.” (from Book of Songs, Xiao Ya) In traditional Chinese symbolism, the deer represents longevity and good fortune; its pronunciation “lu” also evokes prosperity and official rank. Paired with evergreen cypresses and rocks, the painting conveys wishes for enduring health, wealth, and auspiciousness. The imagery and inscription together create a harmonious and auspicious composition.
